Tips for road trips with dogs (15/09/2011)
Don't let your pet get dehydrated in the car.Owners who would like to take their pets on car trips have been given advice by the Dogs Trust to keep their pet healthy and happy.
The charity suggested that owners could invest in a car harness, travel crate or dog guard to install in their car so that their pooch is safely restrained while in the vehicle, in line with Highway Code advice.
It also reminded individuals to research quarantine and Pet Passport conditions if owners are taking their furry friends in or out of the country.
Fresh water should be provided at all times, preferably in a non-spill bowl, and owners can make regular stops to take their dogs out of the car to stretch their legs.
The guidance came as Confused.com research revealed a third of owners frequently take their dogs or cats on road trips.
Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at the website, commented: "Road trips should be as fun for our pets as they can be for us, and keeping our pets happy in the back is also going to reduce distraction for us as drivers, making our journeys safer for us and our animals."
