Broccoli & Turmeric Natural Defence

We created Broccoli & Turmeric 200g tins for our own dogs because we wanted to feed our dogs turmeric every day. The 200g tins are convenient, and our dogs love the broccoli so we feed it as a treat.

Natural anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is known to be a powerful natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Turmeric has been used in human cooking for thousands of years and is also a common ingredient in dog food, albeit at a much lower concentration than in this food.

In humans, turmeric has been linked with preventing and treating cancer

Apart from the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric, at Bob & Lush we are interested in the potential cancer reducing benefits of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) in humans.

Cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs, and we feel strongly that for our own dogs we will do anything that we think may be beneficial. Research on curcumin and cancer in dogs is scarce, and we simply do not know if feeding your dog turmeric every day would reduce its chances of getting cancer.

In humans much research is currently under way on the effects of curcumin. Population studies show that people that eat a lot of curcumin have lower risks of getting cancer (see here). Researchers have also been able to demonstrate how curcumin works in limiting cancer cells ability to spread (see here). We do not know if the same is true in dogs, and many questions are still open for humans too.

Why we feed Broccoli & Turmeric every day

For our own dogs we feed turmeric every day because we think there is a chance the same effect observed in humans applies in dog. Broccoli and turmeric are tired and tested ingredients and we therefore believe the downside of doing so is very limited and it is worth the extra effort and cost.

Some dogs get an upset tummy from broccoli and if you decide to feed this product to your dog we recommend that you start gradually. If your dog does not get on well with the product, we recommend that you reduce the amount you feed or stop altogether.

PLEASE NOTE: this is a complementary food so can be fed as a treat or mixed in with your pets complete wet or dry food.
